An awning is a great addition to your off road vehicle. It’s a simple way to make camping easier and more comfortable, and most of them are easy enough to set up that even if you’re just stopping for a short break you can give yourself a patch of shade or a place to stretch your legs out of the rain.
A bit of shelter isn’t all you can achieve, though. Once your awning is fitted there are a whole range of accessories you can add to make it even more useful when you’re touring the outback. Here are a few things you might want to consider:
Tents
An awning is basically a portable roof. If the weather’s fine sleeping under the awning is great, but you can’t always rely on it being fine. That’s no problem though. Zip on some portable walls and you have a tent, which will keep you comfortable even if conditions aren’t so great.
Mosquito nets
The weather isn’t the only thing you want to keep out. Food, lights and even just people tend to attract insects, and one thing we have to say about Australia is we have some scary wildlife. Fix some nets round the edge of your awning and you can enjoy the view and fresh air without being eaten alive.
Lighting
Some decent lighting can make all the difference to a night’s camping. Modern LED lights are a big improvement over hanging a lantern from the awning and hoping nobody knocks it down.

Awning LED Lighting28 Aug '13 An awning is a great bit of kit to have at the end of the day, when you stop and set up camp. It’s a place to relax in some shade, cook and eat or sit around with a few stubbies and chat with your mates about the day’s trip and your plans for tomorrow. Of course what with it being the end of the day it’s going to get dark pretty soon, and that restricts what you can do. At some point you’re going to want some light, and that can get interesting. |

Awning Mosquito Mozzie Nets28 Aug '13 Australia has some fantastic landscapes, and our wildlife is famous too. Unfortunately it’s famous for all the wrong reasons. Somebody once wrote a fantasy novel about a country called Ecksecksecksecks that, he claimed, wasn’t at all Australia. It had kangaroos and drop bears and the capital was called Didjabringabeeralong, so we have our own opinions about that. Anyway one of the characters asked for a list of all the animals thatweren’tdangerous. The answer was “Some of the sheep.” |
